Differences between “Homemade” and “Pre-packaged” Vegan Milks

We wanted to share this with you because we´ve realised that there has been some confusion between pre-packaged and homemade vegan milks and people who believe that they´re nutritionally equal.

This is not the case an alony with the price difference and environmental impact, it is much better to consume homemade plant milks whenever possible.

Why?

1-The main difference is the nutritional valour: Homemade plant milks contain all the micro and macro nutrients that the seed we use to make them has.

With pre-packaged milk, they heat up the milk to very high temperatures to pasteurize or sterilize the milk and this process kills some of the micro and macro nutrients. Why do they do that? So that the milk can last for 1-3 years on the store shelves at room temperature. (Homemade vegan milks only last for 3-5 days in the fridge). This type of pre-packaged milk is very easy and user friendly because it can be bought, opened and drunk at the same time and you don´t need to do anything else. They are lactose free, gluten free and esay to consume. But it´s important to know that this version of plant milk doesn´t have the same nutritional qualities as homemade one.

2-The second reason is that most of the time , the pre-packaged milks don´t mention the origin of the seeds that are used to make these agriculturemilks. However, when you make milk at home, you know where the seeds are from. Whether they´re organic or bought locally and consequently what you´re consuming at the end of the day.

3-The third difference is the price. At the moment throughout Europe and the world, plant milks are becoming increasingly popular and, as a result are being sold at astronomically high prices. savemoneyWe´re been observing this while travelling through the E.U. Home made plant milks, on the other hand, are a lot cheaper because we only have to pay for the seed or cereal being used and, as a result, we can make a litre of rice milk for about 20 cents, soy milk for 35 cents, peanut milk a litre bit more at about 1€/$ and the most expensive being almond milk which you can make for between 2-3€/$. An this way, you also get the leftover pulp to re-use and consume.

4-Finally, the environmental footprint that consuming pre-packaged milk has is savemuch higher than making it at home. A lot of energy is consumed to process the industrial versions and it produces more waste than making it at home in the traditional way.
